Today, 3/14/2016 is the 2oth anniversary of me leaving for Navy Basic Training.

20 years ago right now, I had JUST rolled onto base via the airport shuttle the Navy sends for all the recruits. We had no reps from the Navy on the bus, just the driver who was contracted to do this job every week.

I remember him trying to keep the mood light, but from my recollection it was like a funeral on that bus. I don’t think any of us said a word for the entire ride.

When we pulled through those gates, my life changed forever.

I feel like you just wrote the first page of a very good book and now you just left me hanging.

I have been debating for years as to if my story would warrant a book or not. At the very least I was considering writing a handbook for kids who are about to leave for Basic Training etc. I would have to take some writing classes first tho..

I remember my Army bus ride as well. Nervous as could be, trying to soak up the outside world through a huge window one last time before life changed forever. It’s as if as soon as you step off that bus, life just speeds up - which you probably know much more about with your 20 than my 10.

Meh . 32 years since Basic Training for me, albeit in the Army, which was probably much less demanding.

For me it was 10/30/83, and that bus ride from O’Hare to RTC Great Lakes was long and very quiet. Until we got there, anyway. At that point there was a LOT of yelling.

If you ever wrote it, I would buy it and read it. Completely serious.

You just reminded me that my five year anniversary is coming up, April 3 will be five years since I left for Army basic.
